ShoreRegional offers Honors programs in all of the core subject areas, as well as opportunitiesto place out of certain beginning level classes (Spanish I, Algebra I) based upon8th grade coursework. As theMonmouth Beach, Oceanport, Shore Regional, and West Long Branch continue toincrease their collaboration regarding curriculum, instruction, &assessments; it provides unique opportunities to simplify the placement of 8^thgraders planning to attend Shore Regional High School.   Over the summer and throughout last schoolyear, many of our subject area teachers from the different districtscollaborated to create common mid-term and final exams.  Throughout this year regional “articulationteams” from the core academic areas will collaborate to create specificcomponents for every unit assessment taken throughout this school year. 

The goalof this process is to increase the collaboration between schools, create acommon set of data to better inform our instructional program, and to create asimplified yet more effective set of 9^th grade placement data.  In past years, Shore regional has used acommon “Placement” exam as part of its placement process.  The placement tests acted as a way to assessstudents who had, in some cases, very different academic experiences from thethree different sending districts. Now we will have a common set of assessmentdata for all students, which make the separate placement exam unnecessary. 

You beasking yourself a few questions, which this document will attempt to answer.

“So, how do I determine if my child shouldtake high school honors classes?”

All students will take various commonassessments throughout this school year as part of their regular classroomexperience.  That assessment data willassist the high school with appropriate placements.

If he or she has an ‘A’ / 92 average orbetter, they should consider honors courses. Check the placement criteria listed on the reverse side of this documentand/or consult with your child’s current teacher for the subject ofinterest.  To assist you, course specificobjectives for Algebra I, Algebra II, and Spanish I may be downloaded from theInternet (go to http://www.shoreregional.org/domain/22).You may also obtain these by calling 732-222-9300 ext. 2100.  ***It is important to note that honorslevel courses require extensive amounts of critical thinking, reflection,academic risk –taking, independent effort and bringing a sense of self to theirwork  in addition to timely submission ofand participation in all class tasks. 

What should I do to sign up for honorsclasses?   

To signup for honors classes, students must register for the honors classes when theymeet with the high school counselors in January / February.  When grades are available, SRHS will reviewthe mid-year grades of those students who signed up for Honors coursesto ensure that they meet the mid- year grade criteria of a 92 (A) or better.  Details for specific grade criteria are onthe other side of this paper.

Studentswho fall below that average can request placement at the end of the school yearby showing their final grade and Final Exam grade have improved to a 92 orbetter.  Shore Regional will seek theappropriate 8^th grade teachers recommendation.  If both the recommendation and the gradeshave been obtained, honors placement will be made.The final grades of allstudents who initially requested honors placement will be reviewed at the endof the school year.  Any student whosefinal grade no longer meets the 92 cut-off grade, or does not have the teacherrecommendation, will be removed from the honors placement. 

*** It isabsolutely essential to register foryour honors classes during your meeting with your high school counselor, or to inform SRHS of your child’s improvement to a 92 or better inwriting at bpreston@shoreregional.org. 

*** You do not need to obtain a teacherrecommendation. Teacher recommendations are triggered by registering for honorsplacement.  This list is reviewed by all8^th grade teachers who willthen make their recommendations directly to the Director of Curriculum &Instruction.
